Active Participation: You can participate without doing anything I think one of the things we really need to clarify when we talk about “active participation” at Mass is what we actually mean by the word “active.” Because sometimes, especially when comparing the Novus Ordo with the Traditional Latin Mass, it seems like active participation is understood primarily as doing something externally: saying more responses, making more gestures, moving around more, singing more, serving at the altar, reading the readings, bringing up the gifts, or somehow having a physical task to perform during the liturgy. And I understand where that idea comes from. Obviously, the congregation should not be completely disconnected from what is happening at the altar. Catholics are not supposed to be spectators at Mass. We are there to worship God.
