Leo XIV Reverses Francis’s Housing Restrictions for Cardinals

Pope Leo XIV has restored free Vatican housing for cardinals and senior Curia officials. This information was leaked via IlGiornale.it today, with the article framing it as a “clear break” with Francis’ policy.

The new decree, which will come into force in February, abolishes the rescript of 13 February 2023. It had eliminated free or subsidised accommodation for cardinals, heads of dicasteries, presidents and serving secretaries.

Leo XIV is trying to signal a change in direction from Francis by using secondary details such as clothing and money, while appointing the same types of bishops and personnel as Francis.
