Life: My Story Through History: Pope Francis's Inspiring Biography Through History Hardcover – March 19, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
For the first time, Pope Francis tells the story of his life as he looks back on the momentous world events that have changed history—from his earliest years during the outbreak of World War II in 1939 to the turmoil of today.
An extraordinary personal and historical journey, Life is the story of a man and a world in dramatic change. Pope Francis recalls his life through memories and observations of the most significant occurrences of the past eight decades. The book opens with three-year-old Jorge in the kitchen with his mother in Argentina as World War II breaks out, and he goes on to witness several historic events:
- the fall of the Berlin Wall
- Videla’s coup in Argentina
- the moon landing in 1969
- and even the 1986 World Cup in which Maradona scored the unforgettable “hand of God” goal.
Here are the frank assessments and intimate insights of a pastor reflecting on the Nazi extermination of the Jews, the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the 2001 terrorist attack on America and the collapse of the Twin Towers, the great economic recession of 2008, the Covid-19 pandemic, the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI, and the subsequent conclave that elected him Pontiff.
The “pope callejero” recounts these world-changing moments with the candor and compassion that distinguishes him, and offers important messages on major crises confronting us now, including social inequalities, climate change, international war, atomic weapons, racial discrimination, and the battles over social and cultural issues.

Life by Pope Francis
Harper Collins
About the author
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17 1936, is the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church, having been elected Bishop of Rome and absolute Sovereign of Vatican City.
Born in Buenos Aires as the son of Italian parents, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was ordained a priest in 1969. From 1973 to 1979 he was Argentina's Provincial superior of the Society of Jesus. He became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and a cardinal in 2001. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in February 2013, on March 13, 2013 the papal conclave elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who chose the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere and the first non-European Pope since Pope Gregory III, 1272 years earlier.
Throughout his life, both as an individual and as a religious leader, Pope Francis has been noted for his humility, his concern for the poor, and his commitment to dialogue as a way to build bridges between people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and faiths.
Pope Francis has published a compilation of his teachings in two volumes entitled Simple Wisdom: Hold On to Hope, Vol. 1, and Simple Wisdom: The Joy of Evangelization, Vol. 1. He also published his first encyclical entitled The Light of Faith: Lumen Fidei, which is available in English and Spanish.
The Joy of the Gospel: Evangelii Gaudium, recently published, is the long-awaited teaching of Pope Francis on the proclamation of the Gospel. He is calling upon the Church and the world with encouragement to begin a new chapter in evangelization.
Pope Francis has captured the attention of the world with his simple ways, humbleness, and love for the poor and sick.

The first thing to notice is that the translation into english came out in record time. Those familiar with translating from other languages know that it is a painstaking process to find equivalent words that capture the sentiment of the original language. Thus one cannot escape the impression that the tranlator has made ample use of AI. The writing style comes over as symplistic and lacks flourish.
The main gist is the story of Francis' rather unlikely elevation to the office of St. Peter's as supreme pontiff. He paints a sober, selfdepreciating picture of himself that appears genuine and thereby can relate to the struggles of ordinairy people. What struck as rather unusual is that Pope Francis pulled no punches when it comes to shortcomings of western societies, without allowing any credit for progress. He condemns greed (as he should) but never mentions a word that capitalism has raised many out of poverty and that, all things taken equal, mankind is far better off than it was 100 years ago.
Dr. Jordan Peterson pointed out that Pope Francis, instead of concerning himself with complicated world affairs, should be focussing on individual formation (i.e. salvation of the soul), something Bishop Robert Barron is doing in his Word on Fire network (that recently counted more than 1,000,000 subscribers). Without using names, Pope Francis seems to agree with utopian teenage protesters who confront establishments on environmnetal issues without assuming personal responsibility and accountability. His actions, such as his intended presence at COP28 in Dubai (but did no go because of health reasons), sets him up dangerously close to the ideologies of Klaus Schwab (you will own nothing, but you will be happy).
His condemnation of violence seem naive, particularly when it comes to entities that are clearly bereft of any human considerations such as Putin, Hamas, Kim Yung-Un, Xi (to name a few). In summary, the reader is left with the impression of a man who is dissolutioned about world affairs but who is very kind and emphatic to anyone he interacts with and who firmly believes that judgement of neighbours is better left to God.
